ROHAN MUNASINGHE Professor, University of Moratuwa

Prof. Rohan Munasinghe earned the MEng degree in 1999 and the Ph.D. degree in 2003 both in Advanced Systems Control from Saga National University, Japan. After his Ph.D., he joined Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and engaged in a KAIST-Stanford joint research program on advanced robotics. He has won research grants from the National Science Foundation, Department of Wild Life Conservation, National Research Council, Senate Research Committee, and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and has produced many refereed publications. He has been awarded the outstanding researcher award of the University of Moratuwa for many years. He has published one textbook titled “Classical Control Systems: Design and Implementation”, and three book chapters. He has been the Chairman of IEEE Sri Lanka Section in 2010, and he is the founding chair of IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Chapter in Sri Lanka. He is one of the pioneers of the International Conference on Information and Automation for Sustainability (ICIAfS) and chaired the same conference in 2006. He directed the Engineering Research Unit (ERU) of the University of Moratuwa in 2014, and established the “Moratuwa Engineering Research Conference (MERCon)”. His main areas of teaching and research are Robotics, Control Systems, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Underwater Robotics, and Autonomous Intelligent Systems. He has served in the Board of Studies, Faculty Academic Committee, and Senate Research Committee of the University of Moratuwa. Recently, he pioneered the establishment of the “Vibhava” Product Accelerator of the Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering of University of Moratuwa and also established the first Spin-off company of the University of Moratuwa in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles. Recently, Prof. Munasinghe contributed to the establishment of the Centre of Excellence in Advanced Robotics (CEAR), and the Centre of Excellence in Intelligent Transportation Systems at the University of Moratuwa

Prof. Munasinghe has provided his consultation to a number of government institutions including National Science Foundation (NSF), Centre for Research and Development of the Ministry of Defense, National Engineering Research and Development Centre (NERDC), Special Task Force, COSTI, Centre for Excellence for Robotics Applications (CERA), and Sri Lanka Planetarium. Professor Munasinghe has delivered keynote speeches at annual conferences of SLIIT, IESL, IET, Sri Lanka Institute of Artificial Intelligence, and at ToC H institute in Kerala, India.

Prof. Munasinghe is attached to the Dept. of Electronic Engineering, University of Moratuwa, and headed the same Department from April 2015 – April 2018.

Prof. Munasinghe is a Charted Engineer, Senior Member of IEEE, member of the Robotics and Automation Society of IEEE, and a member of IESL. He is an amateur astronomer, a wildlife enthusiast, and a nature photographer.
